Researching Where We Bank – As a Community
With millions of Muslims in the UK and thousands of masaajid, charities and community institutions, a pressing question arises:
Where are we banking, and what values do those banks represent.
Our finances are not neutral. As a community guided by faith and justice, we must consider whether our banking relationships align with our values or whether they’re entangled with systems of oppression, including the occupation of Palestine.
📊 Our Research Mission
This project investigates how Muslim community institutions in the UK may be financially linked to:
⚠️ Banks with investments in arms manufacturers
⚠️ Financial institutions implicated in human rights violations
⚠️ Entities complicit in the occupation ans apartheid in Palestine, as documented by the Palestinian-led BDS movement.
We use the global Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement – founded by Palestinian civil society as a minimum ethical threshold.
UK Islamic Relief charities and Banking Relationships
Our first published research focuses on the banking relationships of leading UK-based Islamic relief charities and whether these banks are to be boycotted within the framework of the BDS movement. These organisations play a vital role in humanity work and their financial choices carry significant work.
